New perspectives on Applied Industrial Ergonomics

To be published by Springer Verlag

Overview

Employees’ well-being and performance are two characteristics that are widely evaluated by companies; therefore, managers are focused on applying strategies to improve both sides. Ergonomics has as its field the human factor in practice and its goal is to improve employees’ well-being and performance. To achieve this, managers can apply different ergonomic methods, tools and techniques that allow to risk level at which employees are exposed when perform a specific task, or when interact in a specific work environment, both physically and psychologically.

This book presents a collection of real cases from industrial ergonomic practices that companies and managers implement to ensure a high level of employees’ well-being and performance as well as a high organizational performance. This book is divided in sections that are focused on:

  • Physical and cognitive interaction of employees with different information and communications technologies, software, and programs implemented to perform industrial processes.

  • The principal ergonomic methods applied to the assessment of physical risk level (RULA, REBA, OWAS, NIOSH, JSI, Suzane Rodgers, ERIN, among others), the process of gathering information, its validation, its reliability process, and techniques for data analysis.

  • The principal ergonomic methods applied to the assessment of cognitive risk level (NASA-TLX, SWAT, CWA, SHERPA, HET, TAFEI, SAGAT, SART, SACRI, QUIS, SUMI, to mention few).

  • The principal ergonomic methods applied to the assessment of macroergonomic compability of work systems (MOQS, Focus group, participatory ergonomics, HITOP, MAS, and MEAD, among others).

  • Methods, tools and techniques applied to design or redesign work stations to decrease the risk level at which employees are exposed and increase their well-being and performance.

  • The development of new methods, tools and techniques to be applied from a micro and macro-ergonomic perspective, and in a physical and cognitive field

Target audience

The target audience includes researchers, engineers laboring in industries, business professionals responsible for Ergonomics, or safety and hygiene, graduate and undergraduate students, educated science enthusiasts and the general professional public that is commitment with Ergonomics. Therefore, chapters need to address both scientific and practical implications of Ergonomics in industrial process.

Type of contributions and length

For this book, the following type of contributions are welcome:

  • Case studies: In-depth reports of methods, techniques and tools applied in industrial processes from and ergonomic approach to guarantee employees’ well-being.

  • Full research papers: covering both quantitative and qualitative contributions that study aspects of Ergonomics in industrial processes. Only completed research will be considered, meaning that research in progress will not be considered or included in the book, because the results obtained are not available.

  • Conceptual papers: Contributions that synthesize existing studies, summarize a research topic, and develop new theory associated to Ergonomics in industry.

This type of contributions are typically 18 to 22 pages in length (excluding references) when applying the Springer formatting instructions. Contributions should be original and unpublished and not submitted for publication elsewhere.

Submission Guidelines and Other Considerations

Chapters submitted must not have been previously published or be under consideration for publication in other journals or books, though they may represent significant extensions of prior work. All submitted chapters will undergo a rigorous peer-review process (with at least two reviewers) that will consider programmatic relevance, scientific quality, significance, originality, style and clarity.

The acceptance process will focus on chapters that address relevant contributions in the form of theoretical and applied research; case studies applied to industrial process and proposing new perspectives, techniques and tools for developing and improving industrial processes from and ergonomic perspective. Before submitting a chapter proposal, authors must carefully read over the Springer’s Author Guidelines. Please use the template T1-Book for springer, available in this link:
